Bangladesh logs 990 more Covid cases

Janomot Desk: Reported coronavirus cases in Bangladesh have jumped by 990 over the last 24 hours till Friday to reach 514,500.

Besides, the death toll from the virus, officially known as Sars-CoV-2 which is responsible for Covid-19, has surged to 7,576 after 17 more people succumbed to it during the period. 

Of the new deceased, 10 are men and seven are women. Among the total dead, 5,764 or 76.08 percent are men while 1,812 or 23.92 percent are women.

Currently, there are 48,268 active cases in the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the information through a press release in the afternoon.

As per the press release, 1,197 more people recovered from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours to take total recoveries to 458,656. 

The recovery rate also continued to improve in the country standing at 89.15 percent.

During the period, 12,103 samples were tested in 180 labs across the country. With this, a total of 3,239,701 samples have so far been tested in the country.

The positivity rate -- an indicator of the prevalence of the disease -- was recorded at 8.18 percent in the last 24 hours while the overall positivity rate is 15.88 percent.

Bangladesh has one of the lowest case fatality rates or CFR, which measures deaths among Covid-19 patients, at 1.47 percent.

On Thursday, the country logged 28 deaths and 1,014 infections from coronavirus after testing 13,254 samples with a positivity rate of 7.65 percent.

Meanwhile, the world registered record 746,672 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours till 10am on Friday to take the total caseload to 83,809,705.

Besides, the virus killed 13,672 people during the period, bringing the global death toll to 1,825,780, according to data collated by tracking website Worldometer.

Of the currently infected 22,658,179 patients, 22,277,311 are in mild condition while 106,388 are in serious or critical condition.

So far, 59,325,746 people have made recovery from Covid-19 globally.

The US is the worst-hit country with highest cases and deaths in the world at 20,445,654 and 354,215 respectively while India has 2nd highest cases of 10,286,709 and third highest fatalities of 149,018 and Brazil has 2nd highest deaths of 194,976 and third highest cases of 7,675,973.
