The MP for Poplar and Limehouse has pointed to multiple flaws in Rishi Sunak’s latest announcement. “This Budget was a chance for the Chancellor to start plans for the build back after the coronavirus pandemic.
“It was a chance for him to invest in a green economy, and to finally support the many who have been left behind in his support schemes throughout the pandemic.
“Instead of a future-facing Budget, the Chancellor has delivered more temporary measures. It’s simply not enough for the furlough scheme to carry on until September. This leaves many uncertain once more, when It’s clear that an indefinite furlough scheme would benefit employees and employers. Not only this, but the economy would be helped if people had job security.
“Furthermore, there has been no acknowledgement from the Chancellor of the huge amounts of wasted money on SERCO Test & Trace, or the calamitous private contracts handed out for NHS work.
“This budget fails to answer many questions that were necessary to plan for a better future after the coronavirus”
