Labour MP warns that US private health firm take-over could mean cuts in services and reduced access

In light of a US health giant taking over a local GP surgery contract, Apsana Begum, MP for Poplar and Limehouse, has tabled a parliamentary motion calling for the end to outsourcing in the NHS to the private health sector.

She said: “Given the well-known business models of the US American health industry in their aggressive pursuit of profit, I am extremely alarmed at the possible changes in the model of care and quality of service, especially in areas of high deprivation.

“I know that there are widespread concerns that practices may employ fewer GPs – and they may bring in substitutes for GPs like pharmacists and nurses – there may be cuts in services and reduced access, for example, closures of branch surgeries.”

“It is utterly shocking that NHS services are continuing to be handed over to large for-profit health care providers and that this latest takeover means that behind closed doors a company like Centene via Operose, has manage to get a foothold in to our precious and treasured NHS.”
