"In the Neighbourhood" celebrating Bangladesh at 50

A nine-month celebration of Bangladeshi arts, culture and history is underway, to mark the fiftieth birthday of Bangladesh, formerly known as East Pakistan.

Celebrations from March to December 2021 are being coordinated by Tower Hamlets Council working with Bangladeshi artists, community organisations, businesses, the Local History Library & Archives, residents, and the Bangladeshi High Commission in the UK.

As part of an incredible three-day programme of entertainment, All Points East’s In The Neighbourhood will be celebrating Bangladesh@50 with a range of free activities in Victoria Park on Tuesday 31 August.

This includes:

  • Tamarind Theatre Presents Rez Kabir, Actor and Storyteller in Story Legends
  • Carrom Boards all day
  • Talk on Bangladesh@50 by the Swadhinata Trust
  • Dramatised reading and poetry performance by Bishwo Shahitto Kendro (BSK)
  • Bilingual poetry Performance by the British Bangladeshi Poetry Collective
  • Bangladeshi folk dance workshops from Showmi Das in the Dance Tent from 14:30 – 16:30.Showmi Dance Company will take you through a journey of traditional Bengali folk dances all the way to the vibrant world of Bollywood. Come and watch them perform and get involved in the workshops lead by the performers

A screening of Concert from Bangladesh produced by UBIK productions at 1pm on our outdoor cinema screen. This is a project by UBIK Productions and Samdani Art Foundationin collaboration with Shezad Dawood and in partnership with Yorkshire Sculpture International and Chisenhale Gallery. It is supported by the British Council Digital Collaboration Fund, which supports UK and overseas cultural partnerships to develop digitally innovative ways of collaborating.
