Bangladesh's Fragile Transition: SAHR Warns of Democratic Risks Amid Post-Uprising Instability
Sangram Datta:

In a recent assessment, the South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR) has raised alarms about Bangladesh's precarious political climate following the July Uprising.
Despite the ousting of the previous authoritarian regime, SAHR cautions that the path to a peaceful and democratic transition remains fraught with challenges.

Legacy of Autocratic Rule:
SAHR emphasizes that years of autocratic governance have left deep-seated issues that continue to hinder democratic progress. The organization notes that extremist groups are exploiting the current transitional phase, attempting to delay or obstruct governmental measures through militant activities. Such actions threaten to derail efforts towards establishing a stable and democratic society.

Threats to Women and Minorities:

The human rights body also highlights a disturbing rise in attacks on women and minority communities. In a climate of instability, these groups are particularly vulnerable, and their safety is paramount to ensuring an inclusive democratic process. SAHR warns that without addressing these targeted attacks, the legitimacy of upcoming elections could be compromised.
