Jagannath Rathyatra Festival Celebrated in UK
Sangram Datta: The annual Jagannath Rathyatra festival, organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was held with grandeur and devotion in East London on Sunday.

The celebrations commenced at 12 noon with the traditional chariot procession.
Originating in India thousands of years ago, the Rathyatra has become a significant cultural and spiritual event in the United Kingdom, celebrated in nearly 30 locations nationwide each year. The festival was introduced to the Western world by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, and continues to attract participants from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.

The Procession
The colourful procession began at Redbridge/Ilford Town Hall, proceeded along High Street, Ilford, and returned to the Town Hall. Devotees and members of the community took part in pulling the sacred chariot of Lord Jagannath, accompanied by devotional singing, traditional dancing, and music.

Cultural Festivities
Following the procession, the festival continued at Redbridge/Ilford Town Hall from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm, where a variety of stage performances, including dance, drama, and a magic show, were presented. These cultural programmes added to the festive atmosphere and engaged attendees of all ages.

A Celebration of Harmony
The Jagannath Rathyatra is recognised not only as a religious observance but also as a cultural celebration that fosters unity. Its inclusive nature enables people from all walks of life to participate, reflecting the festival’s enduring message of peace, devotion, and universal brotherhood.
