Colors of India in Switzerland: A Raas Garba Night of Dance, Music & Unity

Sangram Datta: Zurich—the largest city of Switzerland, nestled in the north-central region by the serene Lake Zurich and at the gateway of the Swiss Alps—sparkled with the vibrant hues of Indian tradition as the Indian Association of Greater Zurich (IAGZ) hosted an unforgettable evening of Raas Garba.

A global financial hub and cultural melting pot, Zurich became, for one evening, a miniature Gujarat. Families, students, and professionals in colorful attire gathered to celebrate Navratri, transforming the cosmopolitan Swiss city into a joyous canvas of Indian tradition.

At the heart of the event was the ancient dance of Garba, performed in concentric circles symbolizing unity and devotion. With every clap, step, and spin, participants celebrated not just a festival, but their shared identity and cultural roots.

Distinguished Presence:

The festivities were honored by the presence of Shri Anoop Dhingra, Minister (Commerce) at the Embassy of India in Switzerland & Liechtenstein, who attended as Chief Guest. Extending warm greetings, he praised the community’s enthusiasm and the Indian Association’s tireless efforts to keep cultural traditions alive far from home.

“Such celebrations embody the true spirit of India—unity in diversity—and enrich the multicultural landscape of Switzerland,” he remarked, drawing resounding applause from the audience.

Dance, Music & Togetherness:

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the Garba itself. From the youngest dancers in dazzling chaniya cholis to seniors gracefully joining the steps, the dance floor radiated inclusivity and joy. The music—both traditional folk tunes and contemporary beats—set the rhythm for a night of sheer cultural immersion.

The melodies and movements captivated not just the Indian diaspora, but also Swiss friends and other nationalities, showcasing how music and dance transcend language and borders.

A Cultural Bridge:

Beyond the celebrations, the event underscored the role of cultural associations in building bridges across continents. By bringing India’s vibrant traditions to Zurich, the IAGZ is not only nurturing community bonds but also sharing a piece of India with the wider Swiss society.

Zurich’s own cosmopolitan spirit—where financial powerhouses meet lakeside tranquility and Alpine views—proved the perfect backdrop for India’s timeless rhythms of devotion and joy.

The Takeaway:

As the lights dimmed and the last Garba circle wound down, participants carried home more than just memories of dance and music. They carried a sense of pride, belonging, and connection—to their heritage, to each other, and to the city they now call home.

In the end, this celebration was more than a festival—it was a living testament to how traditions keep communities vibrant and how, across borders, culture becomes the true language of unity.
